A familiar clinic logo appears on the booking page, but a different name appears when the video call opens. That may be an ordinary staffing arrangement. It is still reasonable to ask who is providing the consultation and how they fit into your care.
Confirm the person and the service
Ask for the clinician’s name, professional role and the organisation responsible for the appointment. If needed, verify professional registration through the relevant official register in your country. A title displayed on a screen is not the same as an independently checked registration.
Use the clinic’s established contact details to resolve an unexpected booking message. Do not send identity documents, payment information or medical photographs through an unfamiliar link merely because it arrived shortly before the appointment.
Know who else is present
NHS guidance on video consultations explains that patients should be told if another person is in the professional’s room. Ask whether anyone else can hear the call and whether recording is proposed. You can also introduce anyone supporting you at your end.
For an invented example, a trainee joins part of a consultation. Knowing their role lets the patient ask about supervision and decide whether they are comfortable with that arrangement. The question is ordinary care communication, not an accusation.
Establish the route after the call
Confirm who will send the written plan, where prescriptions or referrals will go and which service handles follow-up questions. If the video fails, use the agreed backup route rather than assuming that a stranger calling from another number is necessarily the clinician.
Some concerns need an in-person examination or urgent assessment. Ask how the service handles that transition. An online appointment should not delay emergency care when symptoms require it.
Keep a short note of the clinician’s name, date and agreed next step. The practical reassurance comes from knowing who is responsible and how to reach the service again—not simply from seeing a professional-looking video background.
